Loved the contrast of the son being tech smart but in life generally aimless while Thelma was not great with tech but extremely self sufficient . With the middle aged parents being over protective and doubting the abilities of both

Thelma Gabriel's Diary

Main Post:

I didn't really know what I was getting into.

I'm a recent police academy graduate and only just managed to join the force, moving to the town of Blackthorne, Ohio and joining up there.

Blackthorne. Not even the name sounded inviting.

But I decided to ignore that. You know, looks can be deceiving and all that. And unfortunately, I would get that particular maxim hammered into my brain very quickly. For a number of reasons.

Besides, 'Officer Crystal Locks' sounded so... so cool in my head. Ugh. Why am I even saying that? I sound like a child.

But anyway, I found this diary in my backyard, even though the little girl that kept this diary clearly never lived in my cheap, one-floor house. I keep thinking someone wanted me to find it.

But the location of the diary isn't important. What matters is the contents. And I don't know whether I should turn this diary in to the rest of the force or what.

I'll be posting the seven entries a few at a time, but for now, here are the first two:

November 3, 1961

Today was my seventh birthday, and I got this diary as a present. I don't really like diaries, but I'm writing in this one so as not to hurt Momma and Daddy's feelings. It was a present from both of them.

Polly's present was nice too, which was strange as normally she's the worst sister in the world. But she gave me a ragdoll that I liked. She sewed it herself. Its name is Susan.

Anyway, my own name is Thelma Denise Gabriel, and I used to be six years old until today. I don't have a favourite book. My favourite toy is Susan. My best friend is Violet Mitchell, who lives next door to me. She has blond braids, blue eyes, and don't tell her I said this, but she's a bit plump.

My favourite colour is red, and Violet's is purple. We wear purple and red every day. Violet's present to me was a Butterfinger.

My favourite food is any kind of candy, and my favourite show is Polly's favourite show. It's called The Twilight Zone and Momma says it's not 'appropriate' for me, but I always sneak into the living room to watch it whenever I get the chance and Polly doesn't notice me. And tonight, I did.

Tonight was the best episode ever! It was about this kid who could do all kinds of things with just his mind, and my favourite part was when he turned that mean man into a jack-in-the-box. I want a jack-in-the-box now, but I didn't get one for my birthday.

Just before I started writing in this diary, I saw a shooting star outside my bedroom window. I know you aren't supposed to tell wishes or else they won't come true, but diaries are private, and no one ever said you can't write your wishes. And I wished I was just as powerful, maybe even more powerful if the star can do that, than that kid on the show.

I have to go to bed now. Maybe my wish will have come true in the morning.

.......

November 4, 1961

Today was the best day ever! Even better than my birthday!

I woke up and wondered if my wish had come true, so I pointed at Susan and wished she could walk and talk. And she did!

She walked over to me, hugged me, and said she loved me very much. I said I loved her too!

I had breakfast and secretly changed my boring old cornflakes into Frosted Flakes! And Polly still had to eat stupid cornflakes!

When I went to Violet's house, I decided to show Violet my powers. She promised she'd keep them a secret.

When I did my homework, I got all my math problems right and I didn't even know them! I turned my lunch into cookies! And after lunch, me and Violet played hide and seek in a castle, in the sky, and in a carnival!

When I got home from playing with Violet, Momma was making brussels for dinner. I hate brussels. So for me, I turned them into a burger and it still looked like I was eating brussels!

But the best part is, I'm getting a new teacher on Monday. Mr Hinnaw went missing today, but no one knows I turned him into a jack-in-the-box like that kid did to that bad man in the show! He was passing by our house and said hi to me, I wished he was a jack-in-the-box, and it was that simple! He's a much better jack-in-the-box than he was a teacher.

I played with Susan for a while, but eventually she got boring. She's not alive anymore, just a regular ragdoll now.

I wonder who else I can make disappear?

And those are only the first two entries, let me remind you.

Trust me.

It only gets worse.

Thelma (Reaction/Discussion)

Main Post:

I saw Thelma yesterday, and it was easily the funniest film I've seen this year! I'm genuinely surprised there isn't a discussion thread for it already. It's one of those movies that leaves you incredibly charmed long after it ends. Has anyone else watched it? I'd love to hear your thoughts and favorite moments from the film!

Top Comment:

I tried to make a thread for it and the obnoxious mods removed it without even giving me a reason. It's a phenomenal movie and everyone should go see it! I don't know if I've ever seen a more perfectly cast film. It was so funny and still had so much to say about life and growing old and relationships and just living in general. Along with some thoroughly suspenseful sequences. June Squibb better get an Oscar nomination.

Thelma (2024) Review

Main Post:

June Squibb, after a long and successful career on stage and as a supporting film actress, finally gets a much deserved leading role in a movie at 93 years young.

She is superb playing Thelma Post, a kind, cheerful retiree who adores her supportive, though directionless Grandson. When scammers call to say he's been in an accident and in jail, she quickly rounds up $10,000 and drops it in the mail. Later, realizing she'd been had, and inspired by watching Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, she decides to go on her own impossible mission to get her money back.

Being in her 90's and long since having given up driving, she needs a way to get around town without the help of her sure to disapprove family. She decides to enlist the help Ben, of an old friend , who proudly owns the Ferrari of mobility scooters. He's played expertly by Richard Roundtree of Shaft fame in what was to be his last film role. When Ben tries to dissuade her from confronting the scammers, she makes off with his scooter in what may be the only car-chase-like action scene filmed with mobility scooters. Rather than busy city streets, they zip precariously around the maze of halls in a retirement home. In the end, Ben insists on coming with her if she's that determined to go, and the two retirees begin a sidewalk-trip adventure through the mean streets of LA.

Parker Posey plays a supporting role as Thelma's concerned daughter, playing the semi-neurotic trope she is so famous for. Clark Gregg plays alongside Posey as her equally neurotic husband, and Fred Hechinger plays Thelma's doting grandson, who isn't sure about anything in life, except that he loves and appreciates his grandmother.

The film is funny and touching as it explores the challenges of aging and the determination many older people have that they will not be a burden to their families. It also explores their fight to maintain dignity, independence, and agency in their own lives.

Thelma marks the directorial debut of Josh Margolin, who based the character on Thelma Post, his own 104 year old grandmother who nearly fell for a similar scam. He saw much of her spirited personality in Squibb, he says, which made casting her an easy choice. Squibb was delighted to take the role, even performing most of her own stunts. "When we first test drove our mobility scooter, we realized it was incredibly fast and surprisingly tippy," Margolin said. "We were terrified for June to get on and considered scrambling for a last minute replacement. But, before long, she became our absolute scooter queen and ended up performing almost all of her own stunts on it. Honestly, I don’t think she was ever as happy on set as when she was flooring it."

There were some other challenges in getting the film made. Margolin said he was determined to include clips of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, since Thelma takes inspiration from it to become a sort of action hero herself- but they faced the daunting task of getting permission from studio giant Paramount. In a long shot effort, they decided to record a table reading of the script and send it to none other than Tom Cruise himself. To everyone's delight, he quickly approved. With Cruise's backing, Paramount had little choice but to allow it.

I enjoyed spending 90 minutes with Thelma in the theatre, and you likely will too, but what reaction did Margolin hope to get from the audience?

"I want them to call their oldest living relative to say hi."

'Thelma" A-List pocket Review

Main Post:

Well, my wife found this movie on our local AMC's roster this week, and while it didn't look like much to me, I agreed to go see it. Knew nothing about it going in but it was only listed at 90 or so minutes so that worked for me.

Anyway, I'm glad I did. "Thelma" is a touching, funny movie about a 90-something grandmother, Thelma, who is the victim of phone scammers, who fleece her of $10,000. When the police shrug their shoulders, she refuses the advice of her daughter and grandson to let the matter lie, and goes on an adventure with an old friend to find the scammer and get her cash back. Thelma is played by 94 year old actress June Squibb, who is marvelous in this role. Amazingly sharp and sprite, she radiates verve in every scene. Her old friend Ben, played by the late Richard Roundtree, is a great foil for her. Along the way, we learn a lot about her relations with her loving grandson and her daughter. The film skips along very nicely, with excellent comic elements and endearing family touches.

B+ ... Much recommended. I enjoyed this movie a lot.

PS - The film is apparently loosely based on a true story, and there is a mid-credit scene to this effect.

It'll be interesting to see if they can continue finding gems like Thelma. There seems to be a recovery in the low budget film sphere. Or it's just that extra summer juice.
